They came on foot and on bicycles, wheelchairs and scooters. They brought their children, their dogs, their friends and, above all, their smiles!
The grand opening of the long-planned stretch of the Easton Greenway, running along much of the Strawberry Line, the old railway line that transported fresh strawberries grown in Cheddar vale to markets in Birmingham and London, took place yesterday – and what a day it was!
The achievement of the Strawberry Line community group, whose volunteers have worked so hard and so long to make this path a reality, was celebrated with great enthusiasm by crowds of people who walked from Westbury-sub-Mendip to Easton.
There, at Easton Village Hall, they found Wells City Band and lots of tea and cake – including one in the shape of the bridge constructed for the path. No wonder there was a smile on every face.
The next stage is to continue the path to Wells... but that's for another day.
In the meantime, here are some of the gorgeous photos taken by Easton photographer Rose Atkinson.
